Cabo Verde Writes History with FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification

Praia, Cabo Verde – The Blue Sharks of Cabo Verde have made history by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking the nation’s first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

The Atlantic island country confirmed its place after a decisive 3–0 victory over Eswatini in the final round of the African qualifiers. Goals from Dailon Rocha Livramento, Willy Semedo, and Stopira sealed the win that sent fans across the islands into celebration.

Historic Milestone for a Small Nation

With a population of just over 500,000, Cabo Verde becomes one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for a men’s FIFA World Cup. Their journey through Group D saw them outperform continental contenders, including Cameroon, with a campaign built on resilience and tactical maturity.

Head coach Pedro “Bubista” Leitão Brito praised his players and supporters after the match, calling the qualification “a victory for every Cape Verdean, at home and abroad.”

“We’ve shown that even small countries can achieve great things when we stand together,” Bubista said.

Unity and Pride Across the Diaspora

The achievement has sparked widespread celebrations across the islands and among the global Cape Verdean community. Supporters filled the streets of Praia and Mindelo, waving national flags and singing the team’s nickname — Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks).

The Cabo Verde Football Federation hailed the qualification as a “historic moment that unites a nation and strengthens our identity through sport.”

Looking Ahead to North America 2026

Cabo Verde will now shift focus to preparing for the expanded 2026 World Cup, to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The team plans a series of friendly matches against top international opponents to gain experience ahead of the finals.

Coach Bubista emphasized that the goal is not only to participate but to compete:

“We know the challenges ahead, but this qualification proves that hard work and faith can take us anywhere.”

Symbol of Hope and Progress

Cabo Verde’s qualification highlights years of gradual football development and investment in player training. Many squad members were born or raised in Europe, showcasing the strength of the country’s diaspora ties.

The success is seen as a major boost for African football, demonstrating that smaller nations can thrive under the new qualification format that grants nine slots to the continent.

A Nation’s Dream Realized

For Cabo Verde, the road to the World Cup is more than a sporting triumph — it’s a symbol of unity, perseverance, and national pride. As they prepare to face the world’s best in 2026, the Blue Sharks have already made history — proving that greatness can come from even the smallest of islands.
